Different Types of Music Videos

Narrative -

This is an example of a narrative video. It is usually found in most genres, i.e. Rock, Pop, Rap, etc., and is used to tell a story which will follow the lyrics; or challenge them if they feel rebellious. For Example: in this video, we see the band knock over a stag, and the stag taking its revenge, ironicly. This is because it ties them to the bonnet of their car and later mounts their heads on the wall. It can send the message that it is wrong to hit wildlife, which is what we can use narrative videos for; to send a message.

Performance -

This is an example of a performance video. The without different shots and fast paced shots a performance video would be very boring. Therefore, this video keeps the video quick and snappy, by having the shots role forward continuously like a conveyer-belt. This helps to keep our attention along with the variety of different shots and by changing them along with the beat. It is also very cheap to make, because you just have the band and a camera.

Conceptual -


This is an example of a conceptual video. This video contains different references to different videos, around the time of the videos release. These videos can be both funny and insightful. For example this video is funny because it take the mick out of other videos. While on the other hand there is another video out there, which is just a robotic monkey, with 6 arms, playing the drums. Therefore, need to be careful you don't bore the listener.

Conventions of Rock

Conventions for Music Videos

Conventions for Rock videos include

• Dark Colours, such as Black, Greys, Dark Red, etc.
• Skulls and skeletons, which relate to death
• A performance section is also normally seen
• Guitars are largely dominant props in the videos.
• There is also some narrative formed in the videos, usually over some form of trial and tribulation.

Conventions for Rock Music

• Guitar Riffs and Drum solos are often found
• Swear words could also be found in some or all songs.
• Song meanings can be linked to hard times, death or other bad things.
• Songs are usually short and snappy

Convention 1 - Relationships between lyrics and visuals, which illustrate, amplify or contradict lyrics

An example can be seen in Green Days 'Boulevard Of Broken Dreams', the lyrics 'but it's only me and I walk alone', doesn't match the song as there are three people walking down the street.

Convention 2 - Through beats - the video is edited so it changes shots on the beat

an example is MUSE's 'Starlight', in which the shots change at either the beginning or the end of the last beat.

Convention 3 - Genre-related style and iconography

'Bring Me To Life' by Evanescence, is a good example as it consists of dark colours and guitars, typical of the genre. It also has dark buildings and props which demonstrate iconography.





Convention 4 - Multiple close ups of the artist or group

An example of this is seen in Imagine Dragons 'On Top Of The World', where we see multiple close ups of the artists and other actors in the video.

Convention 5 - Intertextual References

An example includes Imagine Dragons 'On Top Of The World', once again, during which we see a reference to the Beatles Abbey Road album cover. There is also reference to the Apollo moon landing being a hoax.






Convention 6 - Voyeurism in relation to females
An example of this is in Fall Out Boy's ' Young Volcanoes', in this video we see a female walking around topless for a short shot.(2:50-3:20)

EXPLICIT!!!!!

We could use some of these conventions in our videos to add comedy or enticement for viewers, depending on our overall idea for the video. We can also use them to construct genre and conventions

around the rock genre and help make a relatively familiar video.

Hebdiges Subcultures:

We can also apply hebdiges subculture theory, as the subculture of Rock/Pop-Rock, will be our main target audience. The way the that this subculture is perceived means that will need to dress our band accordingly, therefore, they will need to wear dark, skinny or tight clothes. They will also need untidy hair, to show a little bit of rebellion. We also need to make the surrounding area and any outside shots similarly dark or dim to keep up the convention.

DOMINANT READING

The Dominant reading of this music video is that the Apollo 13 moon landing was faked. We are expected to see 4 different actors going to Hollywood and filming the moon landing, along with their families watching, thinking their in space.

NEGOTIATED READING

The negotiated reading is that the viewer may see this as an idea and not truth and think that they are trying to make fun of the moon landing. Alternatively they could see it as a fake, fake moon landing.

OPPOSITIONAL READING

The oppositional reading could be that they take the video literally and not see it for the joke that it is. This could lead to confusion and the spread of conspiracy theories.

How to Improve:

To improve this video I would make the underlining narrative easier to understand, and make the message easier to understand also. You could also add more performance sections containing more of the group, to show more of the details of the band.

What Could You Take Out:

You could take out some of the walking segments , as it makes it feel like you are watching a Peter Jackson movie. You could also remove some of the wide shots and replace them with the shots of the band.

How Does It Conform to the Genre:

The video conforms to the genre as it is a video with dark colours, and contains angry faces, which can be seen as scary. It also uses the instruments linked to rock, guitars and drums.
